The Schwalbenthal includes the remains of a former miners' settlement above Vockerode, which suffered severe damage from a landslide in 1907 and had to be cleared. The mountain inspector's house, which later became the Schwalbenthal inn, with an adjoining farm building and the Keudell fountain, has been preserved. About 400 m away is the former cemetery.
From the Schwalbenthal you have a wonderful view of the community and the Meißnervorland and the Werratal.

The Schwalbenthal lookout point is located on the Hoher Meißner at an altitude of 612 meters. From here, visitors enjoy an unforgettable view of the expanse of the Werra Valley. It can be reached both on foot and by car.

It's particularly worth mentioning that this place has a history of its own. There used to be an entire village here, with its own administration, housing, a school, and a cemetery. It was built in 1584 for the workers of the mining office, as coal mining had begun in the region a few years earlier. Therefore, housing was urgently needed for the workers. Due to a landslide, the village finally had to be evacuated in 1907. Two years later, almost all of the buildings were demolished. Today, only the white Schwalbenthal House remains as evidence of the former village.

The Schwalbenthal vantage point is at an altitude of 612 meters on the Hoher Meißner.
Here you have a dreamy, kilometer-wide view over the Werratal to the Thuringian Forest. The small car park at the vantage point also leads to numerous hiking trails (short and long hikes) and other highlights on the Meissner.
