The Meißner is perforated by numerous old tunnels that have been driven into the mountain since the 16th century and are no longer accessible today. This place stinks and is also dangerous! And that's precisely why you should visit the Stinksteinwand on the Hohen Meißner in northern Hesse. However, this is only possible with an experienced nature park guide. You'll find the Stinksteinwand above the Schwalbenthal Inn on the road between Velmeden and Vockerode. Brown coal used to be mined here. Since then, the remaining coal in the mountain has come into contact with oxygen and ignites itself. One of the fires has been smoldering for over 300 years, which is why, if there's enough wind, you can still see smoke rising between the stones today. Depending on the weather, you can even smell it if you're just driving past below the wall. It stinks terribly of sulfur. Without a guide, you can also view the Stinksteinwand from a safe distance from the Höhne memorial stone on the Kalbe.
