The Hohensalzburg Fortress is not only the highlight of excursions in the city, but also as a vantage point. Since the start of construction in 1077, the fortress has towered high above the city on the fortress hill. However, the imposing building in its current form was not completed until 1500. This is a sign of how long it took to build and develop such a fortress.

In addition to many rooms that you can still admire in their original splendor today, you can enjoy the fantastic view of Salzburg (day and night) and get exciting insights into former court life in various museums. If you visit Salzburg, you should not miss the heart of the city - especially in winter.

The Salzburg Fortress has a very extensive museum. From the various terraces you have a wonderful view over Salzburg.
The footpath to the fortress is quite steep !!! A trip on the funicular is recommended. If you have problems with your knees, you should take the train back down to town.

Very beautiful views of Salzburg and the surrounding area from the castle.
                    The history of Hohensalzburg Fortress
Archbishop Gebhard built the fortress in 1077. In the years that followed, his successors were responsible for further developing the fortress architecture. Around 1500, the fortress received its current appearance under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and thus had a significant impact on the Salzburg cityscape. The original aim of the fortress was to protect the principality and the archbishops from enemy attacks. In all these years, it was never taken by foreign troops.

During the Thirty Years' War, Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron had the entire city protected with a ring of new, strong and extensive defensive structures, making the city one of the best-protected cities in Central Europe. This expansion also included the transformation of the Gothic castle into an artillery-proof modern fortress that could withstand the new mortars, howitzers and cannons.

Strong artillery positions were added to the outside of the castle: in the west and south-west, the Upper and Lower Hasengrabenbastei and the Hasengrabentorbastei were built in 1633/34. The Cat also became a high-altitude artillery bastion in 1635. With the erection of the two embrasure gates and the first barrier arch together with the associated defensive walls in the years 1635 to 1642, the outwork of the fortress was further secured. In the east, the crenellated walls of the two Nonnberg bastions were redesigned in 1636 to form high-altitude gun emplacements.

In 1643 the Hoher Stock lost its stately high roof because it was increasingly endangered by cannons, the Hoher Stock was now covered with a well-protected moat roof. At the same time, Paris Lodron had the armory with the small sulfur tower, parts of the Rosspforte and - on the eastern edge of the Hoher Stock - the school building built on the Hasengrabenbasteien.

The last major construction project of the early modern period was the construction of the 30 m high Kuenburgbastei with its casemates in 1681 under Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf Kuenburg, built in place of a decaying old bastion.

Hohensalzburg is thanks to the good state of preservation and the location a crowd puller. The outer fortification can be visited without a guide; for an inside visit (salt magazine, torture chamber, tower, battlements, Salzburg bull) a guided tour with audio guides is available; the interiors in the high floor (prince rooms, museums) are visited alone.

The over 900-year-old fortress is Europe's largest fortification, dating back to the 11th century, and one of the best-preserved in Europe. Construction of the fortress began in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy between the German Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory, with the aim of protecting the Prince-Archbishopric and its population. Consequently, the archbishop was also obligated to the Pope. At that time, Salzburg was still part of Bavaria (until around 1330/50) and also part of the Holy Roman Empire (until 1803).
The fortress is worth a guided tour not only for its fascinating history: the views over the city and the Salzburg Basin, all the way to the surrounding mountains (the Osterhorn Group, the Salzburg Limestone Alps, the Berchtesgaden Alps, and the Chiemgau Alps) also make Hohensalzburg Fortress a popular tourist destination. The fortress is visited by around 900,000 people annually. On peak days in August, up to 7,000 people visit the fortress, reaching its capacity limit. With 996,000 visitors, Hohensalzburg Fortress recorded its best ever performance in 2012.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is the landmark of the city of Salzburg. It is located on a city mountain above the city of Salzburg, the Festungsberg, which continues to the northwest into the Mönchsberg. The branch in the east of the fortress mountain is called Nonnberg, on which the Benedictine women's monastery Nonnberg is located directly under the eastern outer facilities of the fortress - the Nonnbergbasteien. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest castles in Europe with over 7,000 m² of built-up area (including the bastions over 14,000 m²). It is Europe's largest castle complex, which dates back to the 11th century, it is the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe and, with over one million visitors annually, the most frequently visited attraction in Austria outside of Vienna, although only Schönbrunn Palace and the zoo in the federal capital Schönbrunn and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is surpassed

The fortress Hohensalzburg towers high on the Mönchsberg above the roofs of the baroque old town. As the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe, the landmark of Salzburg attracts millions of tourists every year to the city of Mozart. Archbishop Gebhard built the fortress in 1077 and decisively shaped the Salzburg city panorama. In the following years his successors were responsible for the further development of the fortress architecture. Around 1500, the fortress under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach received its current appearance. The original purpose of the fortress was to protect the principality and the archbishops from enemy attacks. In all these years she was never taken by foreign troops.
The fortress is open all year round. Since 1892, it is easily accessible not only on foot, but also with the fortress railway from the Festungsgasse. A special highlight of the fortress, in addition to the medieval princely rooms, is the fortress museum with historical exhibits from the archiepiscopal court life. The Marionette Museum as well as the Rainer Regimental Museum also invite to a journey into the past. In addition, the more than 900-year-old fortress is the venue for the well-known Salzburg Fortress Concerts.

Super day trip by rail to Salzburg. From the station over to the Kapuzinerberg, the stairs up and over the mountain in the middle of the city. Then down into the city, through the pedestrian area through the cathedral square and on up to the Wannsberg fortress Hohensalzburg. Even if the price is not cheap, the fortress is always worth a visit and the view of the mountains and the city is just great. If you get hungry and thirsty then go on over the Wannsberg over to Augustiner Bräu and finish there with great food and drink and then back to the train station and take the train home :-)
