St. Peter's Abbey was founded in the 7th century and is considered the oldest existing monastery in the German-speaking world. In addition to the striking Christian buildings, St. Peter's Cemetery and the so-called catacombs are a major attraction for visitors to Salzburg.

The first monastery church of St. Peter was built in 696 by Rupert, Bishop of Worms. The present abbey was built in the 12th century and has been redesigned several times over the years, combining elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo. The historic main organ and the various chapels are particularly worth seeing. The St. Peter Museum and the Long Gallery are accessible via the DomQuartier.

The name derives from the first disciple and apostle, Simon, the fisherman from Galilee, Saint Peter (ancient Greek πέτρα = rock, stone, "On this rock I want to build my church") derived. It is an ancient tradition of the Roman Catholic Church that the first church in a mission area is named after St. Peter.

The first monastery church of St. Peter was built around 696, when Rupert (Hruodpert) renewed the Romanesque monastic community that had probably existed there since late antiquity. The core of today's church goes back to a building that was built between 1125 and 1143 and consecrated in 1147. The mighty church tower, which was raised in the Romanesque style around 1400, dates essentially from the 9th century.
