              In fact, little is known about the cave's previous use. The Franconian cave register only mentions a hermit who once lived there. During an excavation in 1890 by a pharmacist from Berching, 15 human skulls were recovered. There are numerous inscriptions on the walls, mostly just names with dates, but also figures, such as a face. The cave was surveyed by Leja and Raßkopf in 1967 and supplemented somewhat by Kaulich in 1991. Herbert Wimmer produced a high-quality cross-sectional sketch from 2001.

              The cave entrance is just 1.2 m wide and 1.3 m high. You enter by bending down and you're already in the main chamber of the cave, 10 m long, up to 5 m wide, and up to 3.5 m high. A second entrance (2.2 m wide, 3 m high) could lead you out again, but there's a vertical drop of several meters. The room carved out of the solid rock immediately catches your eye: square inside, high enough to stand upright in, a space for living.
