The Lesum barrage has only been in existence since the 1970s. It ensures that the hinterland of the Lesum, Wümme and Hamme is protected from river flooding during storm surges. At night, however, it is likely that crossing the river via the barrage will not be possible because passage for high-masted ships and boats must always be guaranteed. This is why the bascule bridge is often raised at night.

The Lesum barrier located at the Lesum serves the purpose of flood protection and at the same time as a bridge connection between the Nordbremer districts Grohn (Bremen-Vegesack) and Werderland (Lesumbrok) in Bremen-Burglesum. It was built from 1971 to 1974 about one kilometer above the mouth in the Weser. The barrage was operated until the 1990s by the Bremen Water Resources Office and since then by the Bremen dyke association on the right bank of the Weser.

In the many years that I have lived in Bremen, I have never seen the bridge of the lock opened. A first! Admittedly, I don't come here every day, but many tours have taken me here, as well as the Starkebäckerlauf (lesmonalauf.de/lauf/).
The bridge was up as quickly as it was down again. For a small sailing boat!
