The Malgarten Monastery is a former Benedictine monastery in the Malgarten district of the Bramsche municipality in the Osnabrück district of Lower Saxony. The monastery itself was founded in 1175, originally in Essen (Oldenburg) in the district of Cloppenburg. It existed in Malgarten from 1194 until the secularization in 1803. Today the church and rectory are in church and the former monastery buildings, which are under monument protection, are privately owned. Quote end

Six kilometers northeast of the town of Bramsche in the Osnabrück region, Malgarten Monastery is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Hohe Hase.

The name Malgarten probably refers to a very old court place (Old German: mahal).

Archaeological finds suggest settlement since the first century AD. The oldest excavated objects date back to 3,000 to 4,000 BC!

Simon Graf von Tecklenburg and his mother Eilika founded a nunnery in Essen/Oldenburg in 1175. After a fire, the monastery was moved to Malgarten, where his mother's widow's residence was probably located.

In 1986, the entire monastery complex - except for the church, the two cemeteries and the former rectory with garden - became private property and has since been restored with consideration of monument preservation and ecological aspects. This makes it possible to preserve valuable historical buildings and put them to modern use. Attractive apartments, studios, workshops, and a gallery in the cloister have been and are being built. The convent – the oldest building – as well as the magistrate's house and other buildings house the seminar and guest house, and the concert barn provides a large public space where the nationally renowned "Malgarten Monastery Concerts" also take place.

The approximately 4-hectare, creatively designed outdoor area, close to nature, encompasses various habitats such as the Hohe Hase stream, the monastery moats, and the partially waterlogged oak-hornbeam forest with adjacent pasture. All areas are home to numerous animal and plant species. With its impressive, old trees and secluded paths and squares, the grounds invite you to stroll and linger, and will be carefully developed over time. In addition to keeping chickens and bees, fruit and vegetables are also grown.

Part of the grounds is individually designed by local residents. These "open gardens" can also be visited upon request.

Malgarten Monastery

Malgarten Castle, located five kilometers northeast of Bramsche on the branch of the Hase River that flows into the Ems, stands on the site of an early medieval fortification. Excavations from 1987 to 1990 indicated a settlement dating back to the Late Roman Imperial period. The Counts of Tecklenburg built a castle here, which was later converted into a monastery. Structural investigations revealed that the 13th-century church tower, with its three walls, continues to serve as the castle tower. Only the north wall has been added. Other likely remains of the castle include a 10th/11th-century well and a ditch on the north wall of the church, both of which were discovered during excavations.

Monastery Church

The Monastery Church of St. John dates from the transitional period from Romanesque to Gothic, dating from the first half of the 13th century. The hall church, with its Baroque furnishings, has been rebuilt several times. A triple-window group dates from the third decade of the 12th century. After a fire in 1490, the nave received late Gothic windows. The church tower is located south of the nave. It was originally larger than the current one. A special feature of this church in this region is its Baroque stucco ceiling, attributed to the sculptor Joseph Geitner. The choir features choir stalls with flat carvings dating from 1605 on the north and south sides. The pulpit (around 1725) with the depiction of the four evangelists on the pulpit basket and the church fathers Jerome, Augustine, Gregory the Great, Ambrose and a bishop (probably Benno II of Osnabrück) on the sounding board was made by Thomas Simon Jöllemann (* 1670).

Monastery Building

Of the original three or four wings of the monastery, only the west wing, the convent wing, survives. It was built around 1230 and significantly remodeled in the early and mid-18th century. Remains of late Gothic paintings have been preserved in the late Romanesque cloister. In 1991/1992, a fresco depicting the head and crosier of a saint was uncovered at the rear. This is presumably Saint Jerome. The ceilings of the refectory and the abbess's quarters in the convent wing were decorated with stucco in 1734 and 1735. A side wing, built in 1736, was largely demolished in 1893. South of the tower, a two-story extension dating from 1480 has survived. Two late Gothic windows on the ground floor date from this period. The stucco ceiling there is the work of Joseph Geitner (c. 1750).
