As a memorial to the endless number of war dead, such places - usually referred to as "war cemeteries" or "soldiers' cemeteries" - are still very important today. "Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace, as you said." However, the many people buried here were by no means divorced in peace, but became victims of the war and an inhuman tyranny.
The most important and at the same time everlasting function of the soldiers' or honorary cemeteries or war cemeteries is therefore to keep the memory of this suffering alive and – every generation anew (!) – to remind people of the lasting preservation of peace.

Due to the strategic location on two large deployment roads (today's B 257 and B 410) Kelberg was a target of Allied bombs at the end of World War II. On January 16, 1945, a Sunday, the place was attacked at midday by 36 Allied fighter-bombers.
In a short time, 200 to 300 bombs destroyed two-thirds of the village. 17 civilians and more soldiers were killed. The consequences of the air raid were devastating and the shock was deep. Kelberg was badly hit, heartbroken. The rest of the population was wandering and wandering through the woods trying to find shelter in caves and bunkers. The killed soldiers were buried here, next to the old pilgrimage chapel on the Schwarzenberg.
