    The tower of the - Tilsande Kirke - has been a listed building since 1903 and can even be visited - daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To do this, you first have to climb a very narrow spiral staircase. Once you have overcome this it is easier.

        The St. Laurentii Church The silted up church

        People have lived in Skagen since the 13th century. The oldest information about the St. Laurentii Church dates back to 1387. At that time the church was located between the hamlets of Vesterby, Højen and the Lunholm Manor. The church was dedicated to St. Laurentius.

        In 1795 King Christian VII gave permission to shut down the church, which could no longer be protected from the drifting sand. The church tower dates from the 15th century but was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. After the church was demolished, the tower served as a navigation mark and was therefore whitewashed in 1816. The last burial in the churchyard took place in 1810.

              From the parking lot the walk takes about 10 minutes and then you can already see the church tower. It's worth taking a first photo from here. It's impressive just to see the church's steeple and imagine what was going on here in 1795. The Church of St. Lawrence was built towards the end of the 13th century. In 1770 shifting dunes reached the church. After a sandstorm in 1775, attempts were made to keep the church entrance free for 20 long years. But unfortunately the church had to be abandoned in 1795. In 1805 the silted nave was demolished. The church tower, which was formerly made of red bricks, was painted white and used as a navigation mark. The tower has been a listed building since 1903 and can be visited.

The church's actual name is St. Lawrence's Church and served as Skagen's parish church from the late 14th century until 1795. As it gradually became unreasonable for faithful churchgoers to dig their way to the church during services, the fight against the sand drift began, until the church was closed down by order of the Danish King Christian VII. The nave was demolished, and today all that remains is the church tower protruding from the sand.
