The name "heap" indicates mining. The hotel itself is on a waste dump. The Schauinsland was called "Erzkasten" for centuries and today is still undermined by kilometer-long tunnels and multi-storey shafts. When hiking you can often see outcrops on the slope and preceding dumps. There you can occasionally also find beautiful mountain crystals and fluorsparate -seltener galena and sphalerite. Through ore mining had become rich Freiburg (from 1385-1805 capital of the Middle of Austria) and the cities worth visiting Staufen and Sulzburg.

Due to the altitude (1.147m) on the central massif in the Feldberg-Schauinsland-Belchen triangle, summer and ski hikes without great differences in height are possible with magnificent views of the Alps and Vosges, the "Westweg" is very close.
