The Torre dell'Orologio, the clock tower, was built at the beginning of the 12th century and is the first building of the "new castle", the Castelnuovo, from which the present town of Mestre developed. The new castle had at least eleven towers (or perhaps 15 or 16) and three goals. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the walls of the castle and the then existing towers and gates were torn down, they had lost their function; only the clock tower was preserved.
