The Râmeț Monastery (Mănăstirea Râmeț) is probably the oldest Orthodox monastic settlement in Transylvania. It is located in the Trascăului Mountains on the Geoagiului River. Its small church, dedicated to the Izvorul Tămăduirii, is probably one of the few Romanian stone churches that can be dated to the 13th century. Since the beginning of the 18th century, the monastery maintained a Romanian school. In 1792, it was destroyed by the Austrian military as an "anti-Habsburg center". The monastery and church continued to exist. The medieval complex was fully restored in 1998 and today houses the largest Orthodox community of nuns in Transylvania.
