The Great Crucian Fish, also known simply as the Crucian Fish, is a 1.7 hectare, shallow, lime-rich and eutrophic lake in the silting area of the southern Schwerin Inner Lake
in the city of Schwerin.
The Great Crucian Fish was probably previously part of the Schwerin Lake.
The shore is almost completely wooded all around. A three to five meter wide
strip of fen surrounds the lake, only the eastern shore is accessible.
The Great Crucian Fish is in an advanced silting stage and is part of the "Schwerin Inner Lake and Ziegelaußensee" landscape conservation area. Together with the shore areas, it is one of the legally protected biotopes.
The Crucian Fish was part of the natural garden at the 2009 Federal Garden Show. The native plants in the water include water lilies and pond lilies, which cover a large part of the water surface in summer, various types of sedge and reed beds made of reeds and cattails, and an alder swamp forest in the floodplains. 15 species of dragonfly, eleven species of breeding birds, bats and the otter have been identified in the area around the lake.
