A great vantage point with benches that invite you to rest and linger. There's also a shelter and a small barbecue area. The view of the Moselle is simply magnificent!

Nice view with rest stop. You can reach the hut through the fields. That is very easy. Or you can get over the climb. However, this is only for those with vertigo and sure-footed.

Hatzenport was first mentioned in a document around 1135 as "Hattenporcia". Hatzenport itself was already inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by stone finds during railway construction in the last century It was part of the greater community of Löf and became independent again at the local elections of June 12th, 1994. "... The Rabenlay is a rock plateau 141 m high above Hatzenport. On this plateau there is a vantage point with a shelter. From here you have an impressive view of the Moselle valley up to Bischofstein Castle and beyond.
Ley, also Lay, Lei or Lai, after Grimm Leie, is a term for rock that is often encountered in the Rhenish and Low German-speaking areas. The word itself comes from the Old Saxon lêia. It refers to "rock cliffs" and "rock walls", but especially "rock slab". Furthermore, it is also found in the sense of "slate rock" or "clay slate" (Leienstein), as well as broken as "slate" as a writing utensil or "slate" in the roofing (Leiendecker).
The Rabenlay is said to have been "participated" in the naming of Hatzenport. Old monastery chronicles report that the name Hatzenport can be traced back to the Archbishop of Trier, Hetti, who, around 815, had the Hatzenporter Lay, which at that time reached into the Moselle, partially removed.
More recently, however, the opinion has been that the name Hatzenport must be seen in connection with the migrations of the Chatti, a Germanic tribe, in the Moselle region. The emergence of the place would thus have advanced to the 5th century. The part of the name -port can no longer be traced back to the Latin appellative porta = door, gate, but to portus = harbor or ford.
The name Rabenlay was later chosen because the rock plateau was probably encircled or inhabited by ravens.
The rock was formed in the Devonian geological era and is therefore around 400 million years old. One of the 800 nests of peregrine falcons registered in Germany is located in the rock formation rising up from the side of the Moselle. The Rabenlay with its vantage point and refuge is integrated into the Hatzenporter Laysteig dream trail and the Hatzenporter Weinwetterweg. ..."
