The Monastery of the Holy Cross was founded in 1270 by Queen Margarete with the consent of her cousin Waldemar von Rostock as atonement, as a legend from around 1300 reports. The Rostock monastery is named after the founding relic, a splinter from the cross of Jesus Christ, which Margaret is said to have brought to Rostock from the pilgrimage from Rome. The widowed queen probably lived the last years of her life in the monastery, confirmed by Pope Innocent V in 1276. After her death in 1282, she was buried in Doberan Monastery, which speaks against her role as sole benefactor. It is more likely that the citizens of Rostock exerted greater influence as donors than previously assumed.

This church, which is dedicated to the Holy Cross (Latin "Santa Croce"), relates its patron saint to the cross on which Jesus Christ died. The veneration of the Holy Cross goes back in large part to Saint Helena, who was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who, after his victory at the "Milvian Bridge" outside Rome, recognized Christianity as a religion and in 312 the long time of persecution ended with the Milan “Tolerance Edict”). In the early fourth century she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Helena is therefore often depicted with a cross as an attribute. The Church celebrates the feast of the discovery, presentation and veneration of the Holy Cross – called “Exaltation of the Cross” – on September 14th.
