The University of Rostock was founded in 1419, making it one of the oldest universities in Germany and the oldest university in the Baltic Sea region.
In the 2016/17 winter semester, 13,864 students were enrolled, including many Erasmus and other international students.
A total of 327 professors and 2,900 employees (including 689 in university medicine) were directly employed by the university in 2016. The majority of the more than 100 courses in ten faculties are offered with master's and bachelor's degrees.
