The magnificent complex is characterized by the redesign that Margrave Georg Friedrich had carried out by the architect Caspar Vischer after the destruction in the Second Margrave War in 1557. The wings of the narrow castle, which had been founded by the Counts of Andechs before 1135, were transformed into an impressive four-wing complex and secured against the mountain side with enormous bastions. Today, the Plassenburg, high above Kulmbach, is a cultural center of the Upper Mainland. After the fortifications were destroyed at the behest of Napoleon in 1806, the castle served as a prison and workhouse until 1928 - then exhibition rooms, museums and display collections were set up.

Our Plassenburg towers high above Kulmbach ... Time can be spent relaxing here and the "beautiful courtyard" is really worth a visit, especially if you can attend an event there, the "Plassenburg Open Airs" take place here every year. The Christiansportal dominates the lower courtyard of the Plassenburg in Kulmbach. Christian von Brandenburg-Kulmbach had it built in 1607 as Manneristic grand portal. Above the gate you can see him in knight's armor on an ascending horse. He was ordered to order the Roman goddess Minerva. She is the guardian of knowledge and the protector of craftsmen and trade. As a goddess she stands for wisdom, wise warfare, art and shipbuilding.

The Plassenburg is the start and end point of the two FrankenwaldSteigla "Ebersbacher Weg" and "Rehberg Weg". Parking here is rather difficult, but from the city line 5 (formerly Plassenburg-Express) goes up to the interior of the castle.
