THE RAPP MONUMENT, Colmar
Dedicated to General Jean Rapp (1771-1821), this statue is the first public monument to Auguste Bartholdi, who was not even 20 years old when it was built in 1854. Originally exhibited on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, the statue was shown at the 1855 Universal Exhibition before being brought to Colmar in 1856. This colossal bronze statue was torn down in 1940 during the Nazi occupation. However, after the war it was restored and re-erected in 1948 on a plinth replica of the original. Today it dominates the square of the same name, which has been redesigned since the summer of 2000 and is now free of cars.

Fountain and monument to Admiral Bruat

"The fountain, created by Auguste Bartholdi and inaugurated in 1864, crowned by the statue of the admiral and commander-in-chief of the French Navy during the Crimean campaign, Armand-Joseph Bruat (1796-1855), was destroyed in 1940. The allegories representing the four continents and the basin were reconstructed in 1958; the original sandstone heads are kept in the Bartholdi Museum: the figure of the African man inspired Albert Schweitzer's calling, the Oceanian woman bears the features of Yves Saint-Laurent's great-grandmother, who was married to a friend of the sculptor." The following can be read on the plaque of the General Rapp monument: "In 1793, a military training area was set up here. It was given the appropriate name "Champ-de-Mars". In 1808, the southern part was laid out as a park. The northern part served as a parade ground and was used for festivities and sporting events. In 1856, the Rapp monument created by Bartholdi was erected. The Colmar Rapp is one of Napoleon's most famous generals."
