Built from 1235 to 1365, the Collegiate Church of St. Martin is a major work of Gothic architecture in Alsace. The roof truss and the crowning of the south tower were destroyed in a fire in 1572. It was replaced three years later by the original onion-shaped skylight, which gives the building its characteristic silhouette. The church has undergone several restoration works. The last one, completed in 1982, exposed the foundations of a church from around the year 1000, as well as traces of successive additions in the 11th and 12th centuries.
For a long time, the Colmarer regarded the collegiate church of St. Martin as their cathedral ("Münster"). In fact, the collegiate church was not really a cathedral for about ten years: from the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1790 to the signing of the Concordat in 1801.

THE COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAINT-MARTIN, Colmar
The collegiate church of Saint-Martin, built from 1235 and completed at the end of the 14th century, impresses with its cathedral-like dimensions. Its austere west façade is adorned with mighty buttresses; of the two towers originally planned, only the southern one was completed. The transept was finished in 1263, the nave in 1300 and the current choir only around 1400. When you enter, you are overwhelmed by the wonderful clarity, unity and harmonious layout of the rooms.

A very beautiful imposing church in the heart of Colmar.

The Collegiate Church of St. Martin is a new Gothic building from the 13th and 14th centuries on the site of an older Romanesque church. The transept and nave were built between 1240 and 1270, the west facade around 1300 and the chancel around 1350.
The chancel, closed in the three sides of an octagon, corresponds to the type of ambulatory chancel of northern French cathedrals, around which a ring of chapels is placed.
The top of the south tower burned down in 1572 along with the roof truss. Three years later it was replaced by the original onion-shaped Renaissance lantern that gives the church its characteristic silhouette.
The most recent restoration work, completed in 1982, has uncovered the foundations of an earlier church, built around the year 1000, as well as traces of several 11th and 12th century extensions.

The often called Martinsmünster, Roman Catholic (former) collegiate church of Saint Martin (Collégiale Saint-Martin) is the dominant sacred building in the city of Colmar in Alsace and one of the most important Gothic buildings in the Haut-Rhin department. Today it serves as a parish church (French église paroissiale). After the French Revolution it was briefly the cathedral of a diocese and is sometimes still referred to as the Cathédrale Saint-Martin. The current building was erected between 1234 and 1365, the conspicuous crowning of the bell tower was added in the Renaissance style after a fire in the roof trusses in 1572.

The church has been restored several times. In 1982, during the most recent restoration, foundations of a church from the year 1000 and traces of extensions from the 11th and 12th centuries were found. The residents of Colmar have long considered St. Martin's Church as their cathedral (in German “Münster”). But in fact it was only a cathedral for about ten years, from the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (1790) until the Concordat of 1801. The two constitutional bishops who succeeded each other were unable to stand up for themselves and organize a diocese , because it was in the two-thirds still dedicated to Rome.

Saint Martin, to whom the (collegiate) church of Colmar is dedicated, is probably one of the most popular saints of all, along with Saint Nicholas. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is on November 11th. On the night after the famous "dividing of the cloak", when he leaves half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. He then converted to Christianity and was later elected bishop of Tours (France), initially against his will.
Many are likely to have fond childhood memories of making lanterns in kindergarten and elementary school, the evening lantern procession through the dark village / district - and of course the delicious "Weckmann".
