San Michele is the protector of the city and the church was erected in 1600 for thanksgiving for the end of a plague and then rebuilt in 1800 with a particular transept and a colonnade.

This church is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, "San Michele." The name (derived from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?" He is often depicted—in paintings or as a statue—with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael, along with Raphael, Gabriel (and, according to some accounts, Uriel), is one of the three or four archangels who, according to our human understanding, hold the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their feast day in the liturgical calendar is September 29th.
