Attached to the Cathedral Square is located on the back of the cathedral Münster platform, also called Pfalz. This is located on a rocky outcrop directly high above the Rhine and is a well-known lookout point over the Rhine, the Basel Rhine bridges and Kleinbasel and the surrounding countryside. In the boundary wall a continuous seat is integrated. From the Pfalz, a staircase leads down to the Münster ferry.

Description

The word "Pfalz" is derived from the Latin word "palatium," meaning palace. The terrace behind the Minster, high above the Rhine, is so named because the bishop's residence was once located nearby. From the viewing terrace, a staircase leads down to the pier for the Minster ferry on one side. On the other side, a narrow gate leads into the cathedral's tranquil cloister. Here you will find many richly decorated gravestones of members of prominent Basel families from the period between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Anyone who understands the Palatinate understands Basel. Here, high above the bend of the Rhine, once stood the Romans, sent here to protect Rome. When they first stepped onto this hill and gazed into the depths of the surrounding lands, they were amazed. It was a strategic location, ideal for a settlement.

An inconspicuous lid on the side of the road still conceals a deep secret: a well drilled all the way down to the Rhine. From this time on, history began its course. Much has been written about the development of Basel, but for us Basel residents, the story begins here – with the Romans' fear of the Germanic tribes. This fear laid the foundation for the founding of the city.

It took many more centuries, however, before Basel began to develop itself and become the city we know today. Yet the Palatinate remains a place that bears these beginnings within itself – a window into Basel's history.
