The Fasnachts Fountain (also: Tinguely Fountain or Carnaval) is a fountain created by the artist Jean Tinguely and stands on the Theaterplatz in the Swiss city of Basel.

It was built between 1975 and 1977 on the site of the old, demolished Stadttheater and was a gift from the 50-year-old Migros to the city of Basel.

The fountain with ten mechanical sculptures in a large water basin, some of which are set pieces, d. H. constructed from movable, removable parts of the former stage equipment of the city theater, shows the typical water features for Jean Tinguely. These are moved by low-voltage motors and spray water fountains through the air.

In 1977, Jean Tinguely placed playful machine sculptures in a water basin where the stage of the old city theater used to stand, giving Basel a new landmark.
Not my words, but this says it all about the sensational fountain.

It was built between 1975 and 1977 on the site of the stage of the old, demolished city theater and was a gift from the 50-year-old Migros trading cooperative to the city of Basel. It is a new landmark for Basel, but is not a listed building.
The fountain with ten mechanical sculptures in a large water basin, some of which were constructed from set pieces, i.e. from movable, relocatable parts of the former stage equipment of the city theater, shows the water features typical of Jean Tinguely. The fantasy figures are moved by low-current motors and spray fountains of water through the air. The name of the decorative fountain refers to the happy people who parade through the towns in costumes during the carnival.

The fountain basin, measuring 16 by 19 meters, is irregularly shaped and the edge is only about 25 centimeters high. It is completely filled with asphalt and is therefore waterproof. The water in it is only 19 centimeters high, and stone benches are placed all around in front of bushes and hedges.

The carnival fountain is one of three fountains in Basel that neither contain drinking water nor can be used for bathing. - To mark the fountain's 25th anniversary in 2002, a festival with special illumination and a gun salute was held.

The water is not drained in winter and its flow is not interrupted, so the figures had to be protected against frost and ice by special measures.

The ten sculptures have the following names:

dr Theaterkopf – the theater head
                          d’Spinne – the spider
                          dr Waggler – the wobbler
                          d’Fontääne – the fountain
                          dr Spritzer – the splasher
                          dr Suuser – the Sauser
                          dr Wäädel – the wedel
                          dr Schuufler – the shoveler
                          s’Seechter – the sieve
dr Querpfyffer – the flute player

The site where the fountain basin now stands was the stage of the old city theater until it was demolished in 1975, when it was replaced by the current building by the architects Schwarz & Gutmann. The fountain is a gift to the city from the Migros cooperative Basel for its 50th birthday. The ten figures were designed and executed by Jean Tinguely. They are arranged on a stage like actors or dancers and present us with a spectacle that is always the same and yet always new.

"The Carnival Fountain - a piece of Basel's soul"

As a Basel resident, it fills me with pride to watch the Carnival Fountain. Its mechanics, its movements - they tell of our culture, our humor, and they bring life to even the quietest moments.

It gives me joy to see how it works tirelessly, even when the world around it is frozen in ice. In these moments it shows something important: movement, creativity and joy of life can exist even in the cold. For me it is more than a fountain - it is a symbol of the liveliness of my hometown, which never stops dancing.
