                          The fountain with ten mechanical sculptures in a large water basin, some of which were constructed from set pieces, i.e. from movable, relocatable parts of the former stage equipment of the city theater, shows the water features typical of Jean Tinguely. The fantasy figures are moved by low-current motors and spray fountains of water through the air. The name of the decorative fountain refers to the happy people who parade through the towns in costumes during the carnival.

                          The fountain basin, measuring 16 by 19 meters, is irregularly shaped and the edge is only about 25 centimeters high. It is completely filled with asphalt and is therefore waterproof. The water in it is only 19 centimeters high, and stone benches are placed all around in front of bushes and hedges.

                          The carnival fountain is one of three fountains in Basel that neither contain drinking water nor can be used for bathing. - To mark the fountain's 25th anniversary in 2002, a festival with special illumination and a gun salute was held.

                          The water is not drained in winter and its flow is not interrupted, so the figures had to be protected against frost and ice by special measures.

                          The ten sculptures have the following names:

                          dr Waggler – the wobbler
                          d’Fontääne – the fountain
