Just a short walk from Castle Augustusburg in Brühl, on the edge of a secluded grove, a charming sight is the hunting lodge Falkenlust, one of the favorite hunting castles of the Cologne Elector and Archbishop Clemens August (1700 / -61).

In only a few years between 1729 and 1737, one of the most intimate and precious creations of the German Rococo was created according to the plans of the Bavarian court architect François de Cuvilliés.

The choice of the site for this hunting lodge was determined by the trajectory of the herons, the preferred prey hawks of falconry. On the flight from their clumps in the Brühler Schlosspark to their fishing grounds in the Altrhein area near Wesseling, they were "stained" by the passionate hawk-hunter Clemens August and his hunting party with trained hawks.

After the hunting pleasures, the courtly society gathered for supper and play in the preciously furnished interiors of Schloss Falkenlust. Among the completely preserved rooms stand out the lavishly equipped cabinets, which the young Mozart admired as early as 1763.

Since 1974, the privately owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia hunting lodge Falkenlust is open to the public as a museum.

In the outbuildings the falconry is presented in a vivid and informative way. The life and work of the falconers shows faithfully furnished Falknerstube.
