"The name of Schallenburg, located east of Schwadorf, goes back to the Rhenish noble family Schall von Bell, who had their seat here.

History and description:

The Niederungsburg, which was probably built in the High Middle Ages (according to archaeological findings, dates back to the 13th century), today the core of the manor house still has buildings from the 16th century and the extension from the 17th century.

The five-axis, two-story manor house with stepped gables and a round, three-story corner tower on each gable end still shows its late Gothic origins and was built on an island. While the main house is made of plastered brick, the outer bailey to the south is a three-wing half-timbered building that replaced the previous building elsewhere in the 19th century.

The former outer bailey island was landscaped at this time (Meynen 1985, p. 22). According to Meynen, it is “...one of the smallest, but at the same time the most romantic and architecturally interesting moated castles in the area around Brühl...”.
