The flak tower on Heiligengeistfeld served as a central air defense point and air raid shelter for downtown Hamburg during World War II. It was built so massive (3.5m walls, 5m ceilings) that all attempts to remove the building after the war failed.
The building has been used privately for several decades and is currently being topped up with greenery.

What once towered over Heiligengeistfeld as a gray concrete colossus from bygone times is now a symbol of sustainable urban development and creative transformation:
The green St. Pauli Bunker impressively demonstrates how a place of the past can become a space for the future.

The former high-rise bunker was expanded by five floors, landscaped, and equipped with a publicly accessible roof garden at a height of 58 meters. A spiral mountain path winding around the facade leads to a green oasis with over 23,000 plants that not only enhance the cityscape but also improve the microclimate.

The bunker is more than an architectural experiment—it is a real-life laboratory for climate-adapted construction. The greenery acts as a natural air conditioning system, storing rainwater and promoting biodiversity. At the same time, the historical dimension remains present: commemorative plaques and exhibition spaces recall the building's dark past.

In addition to the roof garden, the bunker houses a hotel, restaurants, event spaces, and a multi-purpose hall for up to 2,200 people. Locals and visitors meet here to enjoy, learn, and celebrate –
in the middle of a building once built for war.

The green bunker is a bold statement: against stagnation, for change.

It demonstrates how architecture can assume responsibility – ecologically, historically, and socially. A visit is worthwhile not only for the view, but also for the attitude this place embodies.
