The city wall was built from the middle of the 13th century to protect the medieval trading city and is about three and a half kilometers long. Due to renovation work in the 19th century, it is now one of the best and most completely preserved city fortifications in Europe.

The townspeople were probably aware that Visby's wealth could attract pirates and warlords to plunder the town. The town could afford to build a wall, and they realized that a city wall could be a point of pride to show visitors. So a wall was built between the years 1250-1350, so it took 100 years to complete.
