The fortress was extensively rebuilt by the British in the 19th century and remained in use by the military until 1979.
Fort Tigné was restored at the beginning of the 21st century and is now in good condition. Since 1998 it has been on Malta's tentative UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the knightly fortifications surrounding the ports of Malta.
