The laboriously cut peat sods had to be transported on barges to the villages on the lake so that they could be sold there. A canal was therefore dug into the moor, over which so-called moor barges transported the sod. The canal empties into the lake.

The peat barge is still used today as a work boat by fishermen on the Steinhuder Meer. In earlier times, however, it was used for any transport on the lake, for example for the transport of peat from the Dead Moor in the east of the Steinhuder Meer, which was an important fuel up to the 20th century.
