The water lily ponds are part of the "Dead Moor" nature reserve. It and its surrounding areas are one of the most beautiful and valuable landscapes in the Hanover region. The largest raised bog, covering around 2300 hectares, is located here, as well as the only European bird sanctuary in the Hanover region. In addition to protecting the bird world, the protected area is primarily intended to ensure the development of the raised bog. The renaturation of the huge raised bog areas alone can bind large quantities of climate-damaging gases. The peat body stores rainwater from the winter months into the summer and then slowly releases it into the groundwater and the Steinhuder Meer. The summer-moist moor buffers the summer heat on a small scale and moistens the dry air. A living raised bog is a natural landscape, a habitat for rare animal and plant species, and at the same time combats the causes and effects of climate change.
