The Biosphere Reserve Vessertal-Thüringer Wald is located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The reserve extends far beyond the boundaries of the name giving Vessertals and covers a total of 17,000ha. Already in 1979 it was recognized by the UNESCO as a Bioreservat and "if everything goes well, it will soon be even bigger!", Shines Elke Hellmut of the administration of the biosphere reserve.

The term is composed of bio-sphere (bio-life, sphere-sphere), i.e. the living space between the deeper rock layers in the earth's crust (up to approx. 5 km) and the stratosphere (approx. 50-60 km).

The "reserve" in the German term in connection with biosphere reserve is actually a misinterpretation of the English original "reserve". Reserve here means a supply, a reserve (for bad times).

In the meantime, "reserve" has been established in German-speaking countries and is anchored in legislation (BNatSchG, § 25 (4): Biosphere reserves can also be referred to as biosphere areas or biosphere regions ...). In Austria there is the term biosphere reserve.

Biosphere reserves are internationally recognized by UNESCO as part of the “Man and the Biosphere” program and are part of a global network.

In biosphere reserves, exemplary concepts for protection, care and development are to be developed and implemented together with the people who live and work here. A biosphere reserve is more than a protected area - it is a model region for sustainable development. The earth's more than 600 biosphere reserves are located by the sea, in the high mountains, in the desert, in steppes, river deltas, include islands and marshland.

And some are of course in the low mountain range, such as the Thuringian Forest biosphere reserve. It was recognized by UNESCO back in 1979, making it one of the two oldest in Germany.
