The water tower was built in 1908 and was probably designed by architect Carl Francke (1843-1931) from Bremen. The structure is 45.3 meters high. It has a water reservoir of 1000 m3 in the form of a so-called Barkhausen reservoir. The Delfzijl water tower has the same type of reservoir. This type of reservoir is not common in the Netherlands. The Groningen water tower is equipped with an iron supporting skeleton. [2]

The water tower served the Academic Hospital for years. After the building had lost that function, the tower stood empty for a long time. In the eighties and nineties, there were several plans to make the water tower suitable for habitation, catering or other recreation, but this did not lead to concrete renovation activities. The water tower was designated as a national monument. [3]

The area around the tower was refurbished around 2000, so that apartments and sheltered homes could be established. These are part of the De Ebbingepoort care home. The water tower was squatted in 2008. [4] Restoration of the tower began in 2013 [5]. Over the years, the reinforcement of the walls has rusted and the brickwork is no longer stable. The Bovenkamer van Groningen is the new name for De Watertoren Noord in Groningen and is now called De Bovenkamer van Groningen. The former water reservoir now contains, instead of one million liters of water, a lounge, auditorium and exhibition space with bar.
