The visit of the castle Olbrück is an absolute recommendation. The castle impresses with its ruins, the herb garden and the exhibition tower located in the residential tower. Let yourself be enchanted by a medieval castle in the heart of the Laacher See volcanic region. Experience an exciting journey through time from volcanism to knighthood. Located northwest of Koblenz, the medieval castle ruins rise as a landmark over the Brohltal on a 460 m high phonolite cone and can be seen from afar. The facility is equipped with audiovisual stations embedded in the exciting story of medieval life and the history of Olbrück Castle. The tower can be walked on and there is a wonderful all-round view from the weir plate. In good weather, the spiers of Cologne Cathedral can be seen in the distance. Inside the outer bailey there is a children's playground in the form of an old knight's castle. The Burgkiosk team warmly welcomes visitors with cool drinks, warming coffee and small snacks. A worthwhile excursion that can also be included as a highlight in a hike.

The approach by Oberzissen is a bit winding, but very well signposted. At the foot of the castle is a sufficiently large, free parking available. Admission price (adults € 3.50, as of July 2018) is absolutely fair. Especially since the castle has only since 01.09.2001 - after a renovation with considerable financial resources - made available to the public.
The small cafe in front of the castle is quite simple and can also be rented for private parties (such as weddings at the castle). Is that the case (when I was there, that was just the case), is for the "through traffic" at the entrance of the castle (so right next to it) a small kiosk with a small, but very delicious drinks and cakes on offer. The price-performance ratio is really great.
Definitely recommended.

Located northwest of Koblenz, the castle towers over the Brohl valley and is visible from afar. The castle was probably built at the end of the 11th century. Around 1150, the Olbrück family - the presumed builders - died out, so that the castle fell to the Counts of Wied.

During the Thirty Years' War, Olbrück was taken and plundered by Swedish troops. However, they could not hold the fortress for long and were expelled a few months later by Spanish and Cologne troops.

In 1689, the castle was again badly damaged. In 1690, it was rebuilt and expanded with a few new buildings.

In 1797, Olbrück Castle was abandoned as a residence. At this time, French troops occupied the Rhineland.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle became national property and was nevertheless sold by the French - demolition began and the castle was misused as a quarry.

Prussia - which acquired the property a few years later - put an end to this inglorious fate and later sold the castle to Baron von Ekkespare with the condition that the castle be preserved.

The castle is now leased to the municipality of Brohltal and is one of the regional tourist attractions. This means that Olbrück Castle has - hopefully - been saved from complete decay..."

The climb to Olbrück Castle is definitely worth the effort. You can also make it easy and drive most of the way up by car, but then you'll miss out on the many beautiful views of the surrounding meadows and forests. Unfortunately, a large part of it is no longer open to visitors and the restaurant was not in operation.
