The Château Comtal had its heyday in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries AD. The Château Comtal then offered shelter to the Cathars. As a result of the support given to the Cathars, the castle was besieged by the armies of Simon de Montfort in 1209. After a siege of about two weeks, the Château Comtal, together with the city of Carcassonne, was forced to surrender to the crusaders.
Today this beautiful castle towers high above Carcassonne. Since the castle was completely restored in 1853, it has become known as one of the most impressive sights in the Aude department. For a small fee you will have access to this beautiful castle.
