      "... The spa town of Manderscheid is famous above all for two medieval castle ruins that stand directly opposite each other on steep mountain spurs not far from the city streets. The once massive complexes, which were destroyed in several warlike turmoils in the 17th century, are separated only by the Lieser river , which carves a spirited path through the densely wooded rocky landscape in the valley.A meadow stretches between the castles, which - equipped with a barbecue hut - in summer is a perfect place for a breather while hiking on the Eifelsteig or for a family picnic with children will.

        The ruins of two castles are located near the Eifel town of Manderscheid, the history and location of which reflect the conflict of interests between the Electorate of Trier and the Duchy of Luxembourg in the Middle Ages.

        The upper castle is located on a hilltop that was flattened for its construction. As can still be seen from the ruins today, it had an almost triangular outer wall and a five-story keep that has since been made accessible again. From the keep you have an excellent view of the Niederburg, the town of Manderscheid and the landscape of the Liesertal.

        The place name Manderscheid is documented for the first time in a deed of donation from Otto II to the Archbishop of Trier from the year 973...
