The Brixen Cathedral Monastery is one of the most important art monuments in South Tyrol. The monastery is especially famous for its frescoes from the Gothic period. It was originally built in the pre-Romanesque period, but was later redesigned to be Romanesque and Gothic. Particularly worth seeing are the representation of the elephant (3rd arcade) and the Adoration of the Magi (13th arcade).

Together with the adjacent buildings Brixner Dom, Johanneskapelle and Frauenkirche, the monastery forms the center of the cathedral district.

The cloister in Brixen is one of the most important artistic monuments in South Tyrol. Its outer walls border the cathedral to the north, the Canons' Court to the east, the cathedral school and St. John's Church to the south, and the Church of Our Lady to the west. It thus forms the center of the cathedral precinct. Its almost square courtyard is framed by four arcades of varying widths. Fifteen of the twenty arcades within are decorated with numerous, predominantly late Gothic frescoes. The stone funeral lamp, dating from around 1500, was only placed in the center of the courtyard in 1928. The cloister was once a place of religious reflection: supplications and prayers were held here, canons and other religious dignitaries found their final resting place here for centuries, and clergy and laypeople retreated here for contemplation.
