Once every hour, the bridge opens the passage for the many boats and ships that accumulate in front of this obstacle in summer. Kappeln is a very beautiful city that is worth visiting. There is delicious fish here, for example. Freshly smoked an absolute treat. There is also a chocolate factory for those with a sweet tooth. Excursion boats depart from the harbor for wonderful tours on the Schlei. Highly recommended !!!
On the banks of the Schlei you can go cycling and then strengthen yourself in one of the sweet bars in the city. Maybe in the restaurant where the "country doctor" has already eaten. This can be found in the city center right next to the church. Awesome and worth a visit.

The history of the Kappeln Schleibrücke goes back to the year 1867. At the request of many Kappeln merchants, a pontoon bridge was built. This 180 meter long bridge stood on a total of 18 cranes, which enabled the bridge to be opened at the deepest part of the Schlei.

The rails of the Eckernförde Kreisbahn ran over the bridge. However, the combination of locomotive and railway wagon was too heavy for the bridge, so that the wagons had to be pulled over the bridge by horses. Bridge tolls had to be paid to use the bridge. The bridge was regularly damaged by climatic and shipping-related adversities.

From 1927 the simple pontoon bridge was replaced by a swing bridge. Originally, the old superstructure of the Lindaunisse Bridge was to be used for the new bridge, but this was rejected as a building basis because the volume of traffic around Kappeln had already increased noticeably.

The construction had a rotating part that could be opened and was able to carry two locomotives each weighing 50 tons including the wagons with a total weight of 18 tons.

Today's two-leaf double bascule bridge in Kappeln has existed since April 27, 2000, and since then has safely guided traffic back and forth between Kappeln and Schwansen.

The opening of the bridge in Kappeln on the Schlei is a spectacle in a class of its own. With the -new- Schleibrücke, the bridge is folded upwards, while the roadway was turned 90° to the side with the old Kappeln swing bridge. The four lanes of the new Schleibrücke (2 lanes in each direction) will not be opened at the same time but slightly offset and will connect the regions of Fishing and Schwansen.

Coming here is particularly worthwhile when the weather is nice. Many sailing and motor boats are waiting for the bridge to open at -quarter ahead-. As soon as the lanes have risen, the hustle and bustle on the Schlei begins. Some drive or sail inland, others head in the direction of Schlemmünde and then onto the Baltic Sea in the direction of Denmark or Kiel. Next to the bridge opening you can take a look at the herring fence.
