The listed Schmausenbuckturm stands on the Schmausenbuck (390 m above sea level), a survey on the eastern edge of Nuremberg. The area is named after the red beer brewer Georg Schmaus, who bought the area in 1670 from the city. The whole area is protected landscape area and lies in the middle of the Lorenzer Reichswald. The observation deck is located at 414 m. above sea level. NN. and offers a fantastic view over the rooftops of Nuremberg.

The former Reuhelberg, which consists of several crests, was named after the brewer Georg Schmaus (1619-1682), who bought the grounds in 1670 from the city of Nuremberg. The Schmausenbuck was until the incorporation of Brunn (407 m), the highest elevation in the Nuremberg city area. The highest peak is called Gritz (from Old High German Grütz = lean forest floor).
