Around 1900, the old quarter was largely demolished and new residential buildings were built in the Art Nouveau style.

The former Jewish quarter is one of the most beautiful in Prague thanks to its outstanding Art Nouveau houses. Half a dozen synagogues shape the legacy of the Jewish population. Jews lived in miserably cramped conditions in the walled ghetto. Their situation only improved under the reign of Emperor Joseph II. Therefore this quarter bears the name Josefstadt (Josefov) in honor.
