Because of the railway line (north-south line) that runs over the bridge, a piece of land was exchanged again after the war. The railway line came to the American Zone and another to the Russian Zone. This was done to ensure the troop transports of the Americans who came from the coast.

The most important north-south railway connection of the old Federal Republic ran over the railway bridge. Until an exchange of territory between the American and Soviet occupying powers in 1945, the border between Thuringia and Hesse ran in the middle of the Werra and thus directly over the bridge. The north-south railway line was almost 4 km in Thuringia. As a result of the exchange of territories, the former Thuringian villages of Werleshausen and Neuseesen became Hessian and the former Hessian villages of Sickenberg and Asbach near Bad Sooden-Allendorf became Thuringian. The rail connection was only in Hesse.
