Hitzacker is an ideal day trip destination in eastern Lower Saxony. The Old Town Island, with its several well-kept half-timbered and brick houses that exude a great atmosphere, is particularly worth a visit. The houses stretch almost to the banks of the Elbe River and have therefore been repeatedly threatened by flooding. Since 2008, the old town has been protected by a massive concrete promenade.

Hitzacker's old town (on the town island) lies between the Jeetzel and Elbe rivers and is always worth a visit. There are some pretty, old half-timbered houses to see here.
You can get a wonderful view of the town island and the Elbe from the vineyard, which is on the opposite (western) side of the Jeetzel from the old town.
On the northern side of the town island there is a flood protection wall, behind which lies Hitzacker's marina and meadows about 120-150 meters wide, behind which the Elbe flows.

Hitzacker has a charming little old town located on the "city island." The old town is framed by the Elbe and Jeetzel rivers. A beautiful view of the city island can be enjoyed from the vineyard.

Hitzacker in Lower Saxony is located at the confluence of the Jeetzel and the Elbe. While the Elbe heights (also: Klötzie), at the south-eastern foot of which is Hitzacker, are already part of the Lüneburg Heath in terms of nature (compare: Drawehn), the lowlands of the old town are part of the Elbe Valley.
The city island with half-timbered houses and the customs house built in 1589 are under monument protection.

If it fits, be sure to take the ferry to Hitzacker. On the other side there is a parking lot, the ferry runs continuously and there is no nicer way to get to a city.

I can highly recommend a tour through the wonderful historic old town of Hitzacker - it's worth it.
The vineyard offers the most beautiful view of the listed town island. The history is archived in the city museum "The Old Customs House", it is told on city tours and important personalities are pointed out: Hiddo, the legendary founder, the Renaissance and book prince Duke August the Younger, who ruled in Hitzacker from 1604 to 1634, the scientist Bernhard Varenius (1622-1650/51) and Claus von Amsberg, father of Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands. Both were born in Hitzacker (Elbe).
Since 2010, Hitzacker (Elbe) has been a state-approved Kneipp health resort. Hotels have Kneipp and wellness facilities, in the Kneipp spa garden and on the city island, treading and arm pools, barefoot paths and fitness equipment are freely available. Spa doctors and Kneipp therapists advise and support.
