The old state parliament is on Theodor-Tantzen-Platz. That fits, because Tantzen was the first Prime Minister of the Free State of Oldenburg, which was founded on the territory of the former Grand Duchy after the end of the First World War. However, the old state parliament was inaugurated together with the neighboring state ministry as early as 1916. That was high time, because the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg had had a parliament since the middle of the 19th century, which, since 1848, had met temporarily in military buildings on the Pferdemarkt.

In 1916, the State Parliament of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was inaugurated after a construction period of almost four years. The building, which is more than 100 years old, looks back on an eventful past and is today managed by the Oldenburg Police Department, just like the former ministerial building next door.
