The Renaissance town hall, built in 1635 – the left part was even older – stood on Oldenburg's market square for almost 250 years. Starting in the 1870s, the city of Oldenburg began to transform its face. Between 1870 and 1910, two-thirds of all buildings in Oldenburg, including commercial buildings and public facilities, were newly built. Population growth led to an expansion of municipal responsibilities. To manage these, more space was needed, and parts of the municipal administration had to be relocated from the town hall.
