The tower is part of the Alperstedter Ried, the largest limestone fen in the Thuringian Basin. It was declared a nature reserve due to its outstanding natural features and rarity.
The observation tower complements the boardwalk and offers visitors a good view of the moorland, especially during the breeding season of the meadow breeders, who are sensitive to disturbance. The boardwalk is then temporarily closed, for example, in order not to endanger the breeding of lapwings and to give the animals the right of way that they deserve in a protected area.
