The Encontro das Águas (Meeting of the Waters) refers to the confluence of the Rio Solimões, as the upper reaches of the Amazon are called up to this point, with the Rio Negro. It is located about ten kilometers from Manaus in the state of Amazonas in Brazil. What makes it special is that the waters have very different colors (the Rio Solimões is brownish-yellow coming from the Andes in Peru, the Rio Negro is black coming from Colombia) and mix only slowly.
The Rio Solimões is richer in nutrients than the Rio Negro, which, however, is spared from swarms of mosquitoes.
