The Teatro Amazonas is at the center of the historic old town, predestined on a small hill not far from the harbor and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. With large paintings inside and an expressive facade, it is in no way inferior in architectural terms to European opera houses. The building is a historical monument. The theater was magnificently built in the style of the Italian Renaissance during the rubber boom from 1884. The region became very rich at that time thanks to the raw material. All the materials needed were imported from Europe. The ceiling painting was made by the Italian painter Domenico de Angelis. The inauguration took place in 1896.
