The monument, in the form of a pyramid-shaped tower, was erected in honor of Ludwig von Lossenau. The military commander led the Austrian troops against the Hungarian troops in the Battle of Simeria on February 9, 1849. Von Lossenau was severely wounded in this battle and died a few days later.
