The fraternity memorial in the south of Eisenach on the Göpelskuppe is the war memorial for the 87 fraternity members who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. It was erected in 1902 as a national monument of the German fraternity to commemorate the unification of the Reich.

The fraternity monument on the Göpelskuppe has been a popular tourist destination for over a hundred years. Located opposite the Wartburg, the reopened balconies offer a breathtaking panoramic view of the Thuringian Forest, the Hörselberge, Eisenach and the most beautiful view of the Wartburg. The climb is always rewarded with a lasting experience. The nearby mountain hotel invites you to take a rest afterwards.

The memorial was built between 1901-1902 and is dedicated to the members of the boys who died in the Franco-German War. During the GDR era it fell into disrepair. In the years 1991-2006 it was extensively renovated by Verein. A great excursion destination from Eisenach.

Luckily, after tough negotiations, the monument was returned to the German fraternity. The unity and honor monument with the dedication "DEM UNITED VATERLANDE" was a thorn in the side of the GDR and it was allowed to fall into disrepair.
Now it shines in new splendor on the Göpelskuppe and is not only a destination for those interested in history. Perhaps one or the other visitor will become a little more interested after visiting the monument and learn more about German history. Just the heads on the corbels with the portraits of Arminius the Cherusker, Luther, Charlemagne, Albrecht Dürer, Goethe and Beethoven are part of the great past.

The fraternity monument on the Göpelskuppe above Eisenach, visible from afar, consists of shell limestone and represents a round temple that rises on a wide terrace. This terrace is square with curves on three sides. Stairs with mighty ramps lead to its platform in front on the right and on the left. From the platform, a wide staircase with 22 steps leads to the portal of the temple hall. The round temple itself rests on three steps; the dedication can be read above the portal. Nine columns are connected by the masonry of a monumental hall punctuated by tall, narrow windows. At the top, the columns are held together by an architrave on which the motto of the German fraternities "Honour, Freedom, Fatherland" can be read in giant letters. The architrave is crowned by the ornate main cornice, from which three steps lead to the tambour. On this rise six mighty corbels with the heads of the Cheruscan prince Arminius, Charlemagne, Luther, Albrecht Dürer, Goethe and Beethoven. Then follows the helmet with nine eagles, which wear a Germanic crown as the uppermost end. Strong stone posts connected by capstones complete the back of the monument in a semicircle. Above the portal is the dedication of the monument, namely the inscription "DEM UNITED FATHERLANDS".

In the column to the right of the entrance to the hall, a staircase leads up to the six balconies that lie between the heads in the upper part of the monument and from which there is a wonderful view of Eisenach, the Wartburg and the Thuringian Forest.

You enter the fraternity monument, which was inaugurated in 1902, through a heavy iron door. The monumental building commemorates the fraternities' Wartburg Festival in 1817 and is also a memorial to the fraternity members who died in the Franco-Prussian War.

Modelled on early Greek tombs and combined with Germanic elements, the monument's interior surprises with an imposing, gold-decorated ceiling painting, window glass art and rich stone sculpture. Six balconies offer an intoxicating panoramic view of the Thuringian Forest, the Hörselberge, Eisenach and the Wartburg.
