In the 12th century, the impressive Kalmar Castle initially consisted of only one defensive tower for protection against pirates and other attackers. At the end of the 13th century, a curtain wall with a total of four towers was built, the castle later in its center. The fortress is one of the best preserved Renaissance castles in Northern Europe.
The castle is open for sightseeing. From time to time even weddings are held here.

The first tower castle was built in 1180. The Kalmar Union was sealed here in 1397, and the castle acquired its present Renaissance-style appearance in the 16th century during the reign of the Vassa kings. Nothing has changed in appearance since 1592. In addition to a permanent exhibition on the history of the castle, exhibitions on changing topics are shown.
