The Naumburg Higher Regional Court is the highest court of ordinary jurisdiction for the entire federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. The current office building was built high above the city on the site of a medieval castle. From 1750 onwards, the cathedral provost's office was located here. From 1914 to 1917, the current building was built by the architect Fritz Hoßfeld in the neo-baroque style with Art Nouveau elements and monumental furnishings.

There are historical reasons why the Higher Regional Court of the State of Saxony-Anhalt is located neither in the state capital nor in a centrally located city. After the Kingdom of Saxony had to cede the northern and western parts of the country to Prussia after the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Prussian province of Saxony of the same name was created from those areas, which at the same time had long included Brandenburg-Prussian areas. Even then, the provincial capital and seat of government was Magdeburg. In order not to completely subordinate the areas separated from the Kingdom of Saxony, some high state institutions were distributed regionally. Merseburg was given the seat of parliament and the highest civil and criminal court at provincial level was set up in Naumburg. This was followed up after the founding of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and in 1992 the state's Higher Regional Court was settled in Naumburg.
