The pyramid, built in 1823, is the symbol of the city of Karlsruhe. Below it is the crypt of the Concordia Church, which was demolished in 1807, and in which the city's founder and namesake, Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach (1679-1738), is buried. Around the pyramid is the market square with the town church, town hall and market fountain.

The pyramid is 6.81 meters high, with its side edges 8.04 meters and the base edges of the square base 6.05 meters long. Inside it is divided into three superimposed chambers. The top chamber is open to the outside via ventilation shafts. The middle chamber can be entered from the outside via an entrance. In its center was until 1998 and since 2018 again on a sandstone plinth, the limestone plaque with an engraved city map of Karlsruhe, which was in the collection of the city museum for restoration purposes and for protection during the construction of the subway. The lowest, inaccessible, chamber is the crypt in which the sarcophagus of Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach lies.

The most striking building on the market square is the pyramid. It is a monument to the town's founder, Margrave Karl-Wilhelm, and protects his grave. It was initially built from wood, then in 1823 from stone, exactly on the spot where the burial place of the original Concordia Church (demolished in 1807) was located. The surviving crypt dates back to the 18th century.
